Heatwave leaves 30 students ill and unconscious in a school in Cachar prompting urgent measures
In a distressing incident at Bam Bidyapith High School located in Dholai, Cachar district, around 30 students fell ill during class hours due to high temperatures, with a few even losing consciousness. This incident has raised concerns about the well-being of students despite the recent rescheduling of school timings aimed at mitigating the impact of extreme heat.
According to eyewitness accounts from students, the classrooms became suffocatingly hot, causing discomfort and unease among the pupils. Before teachers could respond to the situation, a few students fainted, adding to the growing panic.
Among the reported ill students, approximately 22 were from the 6th standard. As news of the incident spread, family members rushed to the school premises, exacerbating the chaotic situation.
In the face of this emergency, students demonstrated exceptional solidarity, aiding their unwell classmates. Resourceful teachers quickly converted benches into makeshift beds and employed hand fans to provide some relief to the affected students. Simultaneously, some students were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for further medical attention.
It is important to note that on June 3, 2023, the Department of School Education granted deputy commissioners the authority to adjust school timetables based on weather conditions, prioritizing the safety and well-being of students. Acting on this directive, Deputy Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha rescheduled school timings in Cachar district, taking into account the persistently high temperatures.
Despite these proactive measures, the unfortunate incident at Bam Bidyapith High School raises concerns about the effectiveness of the revised schedule in combating the extreme heatwave. It underscores the urgent need for additional steps to ensure the well-being of students, particularly during school hours.
