Hit-and-Run: Tension in Silchar’s Janiganj Area as Vehicle Rams over Police and Locals

A hit-and-run incident in Silchar’s Rongpur area escalated into chaos in the city’s Janiganj locality, as angry locals vandalized the vehicle involved and attacked its driver. Police later detained the driver, identified as Suhail Ahmed, a resident of Sonai Uttar Mohanpur in Cachar.

According to reports, the incident began when a four-wheeler with registration number AS 11AB 8688 caused an accident in Rongpur. In an attempt to flee, the vehicle sped through Janiganj, hitting multiple vehicles along the way, including one belonging to a Cachar election official. The reckless driving triggered panic and fury among local residents, who quickly intervened to stop the vehicle.

Eyewitnesses say that despite being stopped, the driver tried to navigate through the crowded street at high speed, further agitating the crowd. Enraged locals surrounded the vehicle, smashed it, and roughed up the driver before the police arrived.

 

 

Even with police being on the spot, the vehicle rammed over public and other goods lying on the side of the road in a fit of rage. The reckless rampage caused damage to public property and caused panic in the area.

Silchar Sadar police reached the scene promptly and managed to defuse the situation. The driver, Suhail Ahmed, was taken into custody. An investigation into the incident is underway.
