Couple's families break into a fight at the court compound following “marital issue” hearing at DLCCIW
Following a hearing at the District Level Committee for Crimes Involving Women (DLCCIW) inside the court compound, two parties broke into a terrible quarrel and even indulged in stone pelting. The hearing between the two parties was called to solve the marital problem between Geeta Nunia and her husband Shankar Nunia. This incident happened on December 16 afternoon in Silchar at the compound of the District Sessions Court. The fight was between two parties who came to the DLCCIW for the hearing of a case, the two parties are that of the husband and wife. Geeta Nunia and her sister-in-law, Kuntu Nunia were badly injured in this fight. Both Geeta Nunia’s family and her in-laws attacked each other after the hearing.
Geeta Nunia, a resident of Dudhpatil village of Cachar got married to Shankar Nunia of Kashipur, two years back. Geeta’s father informed that days after their marriage she was subjected to domestic torture by her in-laws and later there was a social understanding between them. Later Shankar Nunia decided to shift to a rented house in Lakhipur, away from his family who allegedly tortured his wife, Geeta.
After a few months’ peace, Shankar Nunia also started his torture upon Geeta and her father took her to his place in Dudhpatil. Geeta’s father, Rajen Nunia later went to the District Level Committee for Crimes Involving Women to complain about the husband. Following this complaint, both families were summoned by the committee to hear their statements at the office inside the court compound.
After the statement, when they came out of the office Shankar allegedly attacked Geeta. He pulled her hair aggressively and hit her head with a stone, which resulted in a serious bruise on her head.
On the other hand, Shankar’s family alleged that Geeta’s family first attacked them. Geeta and her family allegedly started punching and shoving them. In the attack, Shankar’s sister Kunti Nunia was seriously injured after the beating.
Eyewitnesses said that the area turned into a battlefield-like situation due to the fighting between the two sides. Abusing, beating, punching, nothing was left out. Seeing the situation, the people gathered there and stopped both parties. FIR has been filed at the Sadar Police Station from both sides regarding the incident.
