IG, Prisons arrives in Silchar to probe escape of two convicted prisoners from Central Jail

The Inspector General (IG) of Prisons Department, Pubali Gohain, is investigating the escape of two prisoners from Silchar Central Jail. IG Pubali Gohain visited Silchar Central Jail yesterday and also investigated various allegations of corruption raised against the Jail authorities.

It maybe mentioned that on May 13, two life sentenced prisoners Hifzur Rahman and Deep Nunia escaped from Silchar Central Jail. After the incident, Jailor Sudeep Banerjee and two security guards of the Jail were temporarily suspended from their jobs.

Recently, many allegations of corruption were against the Jail authorities. There were allegations of jail inmates being allowed to use mobile phones in exchange of money. The IG of Prisons, Pubali Gohain arrived at Silchar Central Jail yesterday to investigate the escape of two convicted prisoners from the jail and also examine the various allegations of corruption against Jail authorities.

Speaking to reporters IG Pubali Gohain said, “I have come to take a preliminary look at the incident for spot verification. I cannot divulge more details. The enquiry will find out how the prisoners escaped from the jail.”
