India and Pakistan Agree to Immediate Ceasefire, Confirms Foreign Secretary Misri
In a significant development in India-Pakistan relations, both nations have agreed to a ceasefire. This major breakthrough was confirmed by India’s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri.
On May 10, India’s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, announced the implementation of the ceasefire during a press briefing on Operation Sindoor. According to Misri, the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan called the DGMO of India at 3:35 pm earlier this afternoon. During this conversation, it was agreed that both sides would cease all firing and military actions on land, in the air, and at sea, with effect from 5:00 pm IST today.
The Foreign Secretary further stated that instructions have been issued on both sides to enforce this understanding. He added that the Directors General of Military Operations will speak again on May 12 at 12:00 noon.
Donald Trump, through his X handle (formerly Twitter), stated, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE.” He further congratulated both countries for using “common sense and great intelligence.”
However, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, as well as Foreign Secretary Misri, both stated that the stoppage of firing and military action between India and Pakistan was worked out directly between the two countries. The Pak DGMO initiated the call this afternoon, after which discussions took place and an understanding was reached. None of them mentioned anything about any mediation by the USA.
It should also be noted that on Friday (May 9, 2025) night and Saturday (May 10) morning, Indian armed forces carried out precision attacks on military targets, which included technical infrastructure, command and control centres, radar sites, and weapon storage areas, as well as struck six air bases. This was informed by Col. Sofiya Qureshi during a press briefing this morning, along with video surveillance evidence.
Operation Sindoor was launched in retaliation for the brutal terror attack on Indian tourists in Pahalgam on April 22, which had shaken the nation. India responded on May 7 by targeting nine terror camps within Pakistani territory, leading to a tense situation between the two neighbours. With this ceasefire, a glimmer of peace between India and Pakistan is now anticipated.
