Joint meeting of three DCs of Barak Valley; They assured there is enough stock of essentials
Deputy Commissioners of Cachar, Hailakandi and Karinganj today held a joint meeting to discuss and take stock of the prevailing flood situation in Barak Valley. Wholesaler, retailer merchant and godown storage owners associations were also called up in the meeting. The Valley remains disconnected from the rest of the state and country through surface communication, which resulted in a hike in prices of essential commodities including fossil fuel. Later on, three Deputy Commissioners held a joint press conference and informed about the current situation in Barak Valley.
DC Cachar, Keerthi Jalli said, “On many places, roads are inundated underwater, especially the low areas, water bodies are swelling and submerging adjacent areas, water level is also rising because of runoffs from NC hill.” DC Cachar has also urged people to move towards higher places, as water is being spilling into habitations during night time, and mentioned how Barak water spilt in Tarapur yesterday night. She also said that the weather will improve in the next two days so the water level will go down. The Cachar Administration is preparing to set up 20 new relief camps, but as the school buildings are also being submerged underwater, they are looking for new places.”
Even if you are sitting on a branch, and if we get the information we’ll reach you,” DC Cachar remarked.
She further said, “As we know that the valley is now disconnected, so there are rumours doing the rounds regarding scarcity of potato and other essential commodities, in order to contain this we have held this joint meeting. “There’s no shortage of any commodities anywhere in the valley, so there’s no question of rising prices, and merchant’s associations have given us assurance. We will release the stock price on a daily basis. The market price will be determined on the basis of that.” She also said that even if rumours are to be believed and any sort of scarcity arises we can borrow goods from Hailakandi or Karimganj, because together we have enough stocks for a minimum of 15 days, and communication will resume by this time. She has also urged people not to fall prey to fake news and rumours.
Karimganj DC Mridul Yadav said, “Water spillled into Karimganj town, and six relief camps are running in the district. Two camps have already been set up in Badarpur.
On the availability of petroleum, the DC added, “We have more than 2 lakh litre petroleum in reserve”
Rohan Kumar Jha, DC Hailakandi, on his part added, “Until yesterday six villages were affected, we are prepared for the worst-case scenario, we have ample amount of stocks.”
