Kaibarta Parishad demands monetary compensation for victims and arrest of perpetrators who incited yesterday's violence, Questions partiality of Silchar MLA

The Barak Valley Kaibarta Samaj Unnoyon Parishad conducted a press conference today regarding the communal clash which occured yesterday at Panchayat Road between two communities. President of the Parishad Sujit Das Choudhury expressed sadness over the unfortunate communal clash that occurred between the two communities. He condemned the incident and highlighted some inflammatory comments made on social media by a person named Azar Mazumder, a resident of Panchayat Road, who threatened to rape mothers and sisters of the Kaibarta community in India in the future like they did in Bangladesh.

Das Choudhury stated that while people belonging to Kaibarta community were not directly involved in yesterday’s incident, tensions escalated after some Hindu organisations objected to the alleged slaughter of a cow despite Assam’s Cattle Preservation Law clearly prohibiting slaughter of cows or sale of beef within 5 km radius of any temple. The clash resulted in the destruction of five e-rickshaws and left ten people from the Kaibarta community wounded as well as innocent passersby. Disturbed by the threats made against their community, Das Choudhury demanded the immediate arrest of Azar Mazumder and his family within three hours, failing which they threatened to organise a large-scale movement by the night and the administration would remaind mere spectators to it.

Das Choudhury urged the authorities to take action against those who posted derogatory comments on social media and attacked the Kaibarta community. He believed that a third party incited the communal flare-up and called for justice regarding the vandalism that occurred in a Hindu area, right infront of the eyes of the administration. Additionally, he also raised concerns about the partiality of the Silchar MLA, who provided financial assistance to only one community and was accused of instigating communal tensions. Das Choudhury also alleged that the Silchar MLA was provided a Scorpio car by Muslims and his files in the office were handled by a Muslim woman.

Following the press conference, some members of the Parishad were summoned to the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP), where they were briefed on the situation. Upon exiting the office, President Sujit Das Choudhury informed reporters that the person responsible for the derogatory comments on social media against Kaibartas had been arrested by the police and his phone had been seized. He also informed that the Deputy Commissioner (DC) called him to his office at 4:30 pm to discuss the damages incurred by their community members, and the Parishad intends to provide a detailed list of it.

The Barak Valley Kaibarta Samaj Unnoyon Parishad seeks justice, adequate compensation for the destroyed property, and medical assistance for the injured individuals. They attribute the rape threats received by their mothers and sisters to the alleged attempts of the Silchar MLA to appease the other community.
