Kanchanjunga Express to Get Modern LHB Coaches: NF Railway
In a major step towards enhancing passenger safety and comfort, the Indian Railways has announced the introduction of modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches for the Kanchanjunga Express. The upgraded LHB rakes will replace the existing conventional ICF coaches of Train No. 13173/13174 (Sealdah–Sabroom) and 13175/13176 (Sealdah–Silchar). According to Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the new rakes will become operational from November 28 and 29, 2025, respectively.
The Kanchanjunga Express, a crucial rail link between eastern India and the Northeast, has long been regarded as a lifeline for passengers travelling across the region. The shift to LHB coaches marks a significant upgrade in both safety and comfort. These state-of-the-art coaches are equipped with an anti-telescopic design that reduces damage during collisions, advanced suspension systems for smoother rides, and modern interiors that enhance the overall travel experience. LHB coaches also support higher speeds and require comparatively less maintenance.
The new rake composition will include five AC 3-tier coaches, one AC 2-tier coach, nine sleeper coaches, and four general seating coaches, ensuring balanced accommodation across travel classes.
This development comes months after Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of railway services in Barak Valley. In a letter to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on June 26, Purkayastha highlighted issues such as ageing ICF coaches, malfunctioning AC units, broken fittings and poor maintenance at the Silchar station pit line. He flagged that passengers suffered during long journeys, especially in the hilly terrain where non-functional air conditioning added to their discomfort. Complaints regarding unclean linen and shortage of basic amenities were also brought to the ministry’s attention.
Responding to these persistent complaints, NFR stated that the move to LHB rakes demonstrates Indian Railways’ commitment to improving service quality and ensuring safer, more reliable travel for passengers of the Barak Valley and beyond.
The announcement was shared by Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, CPRO of Northeast Frontier Railway, who said the introduction of LHB coaches reflects the Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernise its rolling stock and offer passengers a world-class travel experience.
