Karimganj BSF official awarded by President of India

Akhil Chandra Mandal, deputy commandant at 7 Battalion, BSF in Karimganj district, has been awarded the prestigious police medal for meritorious service by the President of India on Saturday.

Born on July 21, 1964 in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, Mandal completed his schooling from Mandalghat High School in Jalpaiguri and later studied at Jalpaiguri Commerce College.

He joined the BSF in 1988 as a sub-inspector and took training at Tekanpur, Gwalior. Thereafter, he was posted in different states including Punjab, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir and Gujarat (Indo-Pak border).

In 1991, he took commando training and was selected for special protection group. Later, he served as SPG from 1993 to 1997 in New Delhi. He also served in Kashmir, Line of Control (LOC) and was part of many operations there. In one of such remarkable incidents, Mandal’s team had gunned down three militants and seized arms, ammunition and explosives in huge quantities.

Post that, he served in West Bengal and Tripura. Presently, he is serving as a deputy commandant at 7 Battalion BSF in Karimganj district in south Assam.

On January 26, Mandal was conferred with the prestigious police medal for meritorious service for his thirty years of service to the nation.

The police medal is a decoration awarded to members of law enforcement in India. This is awarded for gallantry or distinguished service, with the gallantry version of the medal being accorded a higher precedence and is awarded annually on Republic Day and Independence Day.
