Karimganj Cop Arrested: Bribery Scandal Shakes Police Integrity

A constable from Sribhumi (formerly Karimganj) Sadar Police Station was caught red-handed accepting a ₹4,000 bribe near Shambu Sagar Park by the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Cell. The arrest came after a chilling account by a victim, Jahangir Alam, who alleged threats and extortion in a case involving a local goon.

A constable from Sribhumi Police Station, Swapan Das, was apprehended by the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Cell while accepting a bribe of ₹4,000. The incident occurred this afternoon near Shambu Sagar Park in Sribhumi, where the constable was caught red-handed by vigilance officers. The money was reportedly taken from Jahangir Alam to resolve a case.

Jahangir Alam later revealed that Swapan Das had earlier demanded ₹5,000 to dismiss a case. When the payment was delayed, Das allegedly threatened Alam’s family. Jahangir, who claimed he is out of town due to fear, agreed to send ₹4,000 through his wife. Before doing so, he recorded his phone conversation with Das and shared it with the vigilance team, which led to the sting operation and arrest.

The case in question involves a man named Sabul Islam, referred to as a “goon” by Jahangir, and relates to an assault incident where Jahangir was injured with a knife. Jahangir, a witness in the case, claims that police corruption is rampant, with bribes being used to manipulate outcomes. He added that threats of wrongful arrest were used to extort money from him.

Bribery, threats, and manipulative tactics by police officers not only undermine the integrity of the law but also erode public trust in the very system meant to ensure justice and safety. Such actions create an environment where victims and witnesses, instead of feeling protected, live in fear of the authorities. This misuse of power not only victimises individuals like Jahangir Alam but also casts a shadow on the reputation of the entire police force.

When those tasked with upholding the law resort to breaking it for personal gain, it raises serious concerns about accountability and the ethical foundation of law enforcement. These practices compromise justice, enabling wrongdoers to escape punishment while silencing those seeking fairness
