Karimganj DC Imposes Restrictions in Bazaricherra, Tightens Security Amid Fears of North Tripura Violence Spillover
The impact of the Tripura communal clash has been felt in Assam. At least one person was killed and 17 others were injured in North Tripura district’s Kadamtala area on Sunday after a disagreement over Durga Puja subscriptions escalated into violence. Several shops were vandalised, looted, and set ablaze on the streets, adding to the chaos that engulfed the area.
The North Tripura police were forced to open fire and resort to lathi charges to control the situation, which saw clashes between two communities. Violence spread from Kadamtala to adjacent areas, raising concerns of further unrest in Karimganj, Assam, which borders Tripura. Security has also been beefed up in that area, with police patrolling the streets to prevent any untoward activity in the light of Durga Puja celebrations.
This afternoon, Karimganj police have already conducted a flag march to ensure security along the Assam-Tripura border where the clashes occurred.
In the Bazaricherra area of Karimganj, District Magistrate Pradeep Kumar Dwivedi, IAS, has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS, following concerns over potential disturbances to public peace. This urgent order was enacted based on reports from the Circle Officer of Patharkandi Revenue Circle, highlighting fears of a breach of law and order.
Key restrictions have been implemented, including:
1. Prohibition on the assembly of five or more people without prior permission.
2. A ban on organising rallies, demonstrations, or strikes without approval.
3. A ban on carrying weapons, explosives, or suspicious items.
4. Restrictions on traffic obstruction and unauthorised parking.
5. A ban on the use of loudspeakers without permission.
6. These restrictions will not apply to State and Central Government employees on duty or emergency services. Violators could face legal consequences.
The District Magistrate has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj, Police Superintendent, and executive magistrates to enforce these measures strictly. The situation remains tense as authorities work to prevent further escalation.
