Karimganj-man who died in the month of June has been confirmed as 1st death due to Japanese encephalitis in SMCH in 2022

In the month of June, a male patient admitted to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) was declared dead. It has been declared as a death due to Japanese encephalitis. Normally, JE Symptoms include  fever, headache, and vomiting. Some patients also suffer neurologic disorders, weakness, disoriented movement.

Following the Standard Operating Procedures, the findings of various tests performed on the patient from Karimganj were sent to the dead audit board. This is a protocol followed for all suspected JE deaths. The death audit board then studies the reports and confirms it to be a death due to Japanese encephalitis.

Official sources in SMCH confirmed that the Karimganj man, who died in the month of June has been officially declared as a death due to Japanese encephalitis.

“Principal Secretary (Health) Avinash Joshi has directed all districts to form a District Rapid Response team on Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) and JE by July 16 under the guidance of their respective Deputy Commissioners. The Standard Operating Procedures and guidelines communicated by the National Health Mission, Assam are to be followed by all the districts for AES/JE case detection, management and referral, he said,” reported Times of India.
