Police arrested a Bangladeshi national from Patharkandi in Karimganj district late on Monday night.
The man identified as Jamal Uddin (54), son of M. Bhuiya, hails from Noakhali district in Bangladesh.
The officer in-charge of Patharkandi police station D. Thakuria said police, on the basis of a tip-off, carried out an operation in a secret place in Patharkandi, around 80km from Silchar, and apprehended Jamal, who was produced before a court in Karimganj on Tuesday and sent to judicial custody.
“During the interrogation, Jamal confessed that he is a resident of Bangladesh and said he has been staying in India for the past few years. His name is even present in the voter-list,” Thakuria said.
Thakuria said Jamal also confessed that he came to India through a border area in Malda district of West Bengal. Thereafter, he came to Patharkandi and started staying at Tillabari village. He later married a girl R. Begum of Dengarbond village and lived there for some time.
He was pushed back to Bangladesh after he was caught by police. He came to India again through a border area in Patharkandi after few years and started living at Dholcherra village. There he married another girl M. Begum and has been living like before, Thakuria said.
Finally he was caught again on Monday night.
