Karimganj Police Seize 1600 Bottles of Banned Phensedyl at Assam-Tripura Border, one arrested
In a significant crackdown on illegal drug trafficking, Karimganj Police intercepted a container truck today at the Churaibari Check Post, along the Assam-Tripura border, and seized 1600 bottles of banned Phensedyl cough syrup worth crores. The operation successfully halted the truck moments before it entered Tripura.
The vehicle, bearing registration number NL01AC0700, was transporting cargo from Delhi to Tripura. During a thorough search, police discovered 16 cartons of Phensedyl, each containing 100 bottles of the codeine-laced cough syrup. The driver of the truck was apprehended on the spot.
A Tripura local, Jayanta Deb, was also arrested in connection with the possession of these illegal drugs. Karimganj Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das, in a statement to Barak Bulletin, confirmed the details of the seizure: “A vehicle bearing Number NL01AC0700 was intercepted at Churaibari check post at Assam-Tripura border. On thorough search, 16 cartons (total – 16 × 100 = 1600 bottles) of codeine phosphate cough syrup PHENSEDYL were recovered from the vehicle.”
The police have launched an investigation to trace the origin and intended destination of the illegal consignment. Phensedyl contains codeine, a narcotic drug that can cause addiction when used in large quantities over time and is often used as a substitute for alcohol.
This seizure underscores the ongoing efforts by Karimganj Police to combat the trafficking of illegal substances and the Assam Police’s larger goal of “War on Drugs”.
