Labour unrest in Arcuttipore Tea Estate of Cachar; Thousands irked by delay in disbursal of bonus
Tension prevails in Arcuttipore Tea Estate in Cachar District. Thousands of labourers gathered today morning and started demonstration demanding their bonus payment that according to them is long pending. The labourers then got irked and started vandalising the office. Some even tried to attack the manager of the tea estate.
Police officials rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. The angry mob chased police officials and rushed them away from the spot.
One of the protesting labourers said, “This manager has been playing with our needs for a while. For the past fifteen days he has been delaying our bonus. Now we are just a couple of days away from the Durga Puja and our bonus hasn’t been cleared yet.”
The protestor added, “We have made it clear to him that he need to hd ike the bonus we were sanctioned last year to keep up with the inflation. Forget the hike, he hasn’t been matching what was sanctioned last year.”
The protest continued even after the arrival of the Police Officials. Soon Officer In Charge of Udharbond Police station rushed to the spot along with a huge troop of CRPF jawans. After their arrival, normalcy was restored in the tea estate.
However, as per latest available information the labourers continue their protest against manager, Satya Narayan Singha and the situation remains tensed.
