Lakhipur Flood Saga: "30-40 Families are affected and no one from administration has visited us" states a local from Pailapool

Continuous rainfall has triggered a flood-like situation across Barak Valley, leaving residents in distress. The town of Silchar grapples with waterlogging, evoking memories of past floods, while rural areas endure the brunt as families are already affected.

In Lakhipur Constituency, the situation has escalated with floods impacting several areas. The convergence of Chiri, Jiri, and Barak Rivers has submerged homes, prompting urgent evacuation efforts.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has launched a comprehensive evacuation program since this morning. Four relief camps have been set up in strategic locations: Jirighat, Dighli Bahadurpur LP School, Baladhan Tea Estate, and Pailapool Neheru Higher Secondary School. Officials indicate more camps may be established if conditions worsen.

MLA Kaushik Roy is actively visiting these relief camps to assess the wellbeing of flood victims. As per reports, local authorities, including the police force, are tirelessly working to manage the crisis. Although, many locals have risen their voice regarding negligence from the authority’s part.

While the flood situation persists across rural areas like Lakhinagar GP, Labak GP, Dighli Bahadurpur GP, Gobindapur Algapur GP, Dungripar GP, Baladhan Tea Estate, and parts of Lakhipur Town’s Ward No. 1 along with many other areas, there have been no reports of severe casualties.

However, amidst these efforts, some affected residents have raised concerns. They claim that authorities have neglected them, failing to gather information or offer assistance promptly. In Labak, one local resident stated, “Around 19-20 houses are already submerged. Families with children are in dire straits, as water levels have been rising for three days.” Similarly, a resident from Pailapool mentioned, “30-40 families are affected here, and no one from the administration has visited us. Water continues to rise, worsening our situation.”
