Land Mafia Dupes Silchar Woman of Rs 22 Lakh; CM’s Intervention Ensures Action, Refund Promised

An alleged land mafia has taken Rs 22 lakh rupees from a Chencoorie Road local at the behest to buy a plot from a landowner. The land mafia identified as Ashok Sarkar acted as a middleman in the transaction. But after taking the entire sum of Rs 22 lakhs, Sarkar didn’t stand up to the promise and started postponing the sale. Four years had passed with this and even after FIR and police complaints, the 26-year-old victim didn’t get a single penny in return, let alone the assured plot of land. During the recent visit of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to Lakhipur on December 1, brought some hope to her and with his intervention, the case now sees the light of hope.

Mamon Das, a local of Chencoorie Road Silchar had paid Ra 22 lakh rupees four years back to Ashok Sarkar, who turns out to be a land mafia. Back then Das was trying to buy a plot of land and Sarkar acted as the middleman in this transaction. Sarkar duped Das and got hold of all her money but fell short of the promise of land. After Das handed over the money, Sarkar started acting differently. He no longer showed the conviction to get her the land.

When Mamon asked for the transaction and the paperwork, he would postpone the date but never show up for the transaction. Later Mamon asked for the money back if not the land. Sarkar didn’t agree to that as well.

As per Mamon Das, she filed an FIR also and there were several rounds of meetings with the locals, the victim and the mafia, but nothing proved to be effective in getting her money back.

Not losing all hope, Mamon reached out to the Chief Minister of Assam for help. During his recent visit to Lakhipur on December 1, Mamon reached out to him for help. Ultimately she was able to reach the CM when he was at the Kumbhir Tea Estate bungalow before leaving for Guwahati.

Mamon said, the CM heard her complaint and asked Cachar SP Numal Mahatta to look after the matter. SP Mahatta took the written complaint from the victim and assured her to get her money back. Today, November 4, after the intervention of the SP, the Cachar Police got hold of Ashok Sarkar, the land mafia and asked him to return the amount.

Sarkar assured to cooperate and return some amount of the total Rs 22 lakhs within 4 months he would return the money to the victim Das. The land mafia had signed a written agreement with the police to return the money within 4 months.

The victim thanked the CM and SP Cachar and Cachar Police who fast-tracked the matter.
