Landlord Locks Udharbond Congress Office Over Unpaid Rent
Amid the ongoing election atmosphere, the Congress party has allegedly faced an embarrassing situation in Udharbond, Cachar district, after a landlord locked its local office for non-payment of rent.
The Udharbond Block Congress office, located at Pangram, had been functioning from a rented building. The landlord, Dhiren Singha, alleged that rent has not been paid for several months despite repeated reminders. Left with no option, he locked the office premises during the day.
Speaking to reporters, Singha said, “The space was taken on rent when Pulak Roy was the president. When he defaulted for some time, I told him that I cannot keep running after him for payments. After he left the position, another group took charge, but they did the same. They kept the rent pending and only assured me that they would clear it, which they never did.”
He further added, “The last payment was made for the period from May to July 2025, when Rs. 15,000 was paid. After that, even people from Silchar promised to pay in December but failed again. So far, eight months’ rent is pending till March, amounting to Rs. 40,000.”
Singha also claimed that he had approached Udharbond Congress candidate Ajit Singh regarding the issue. “When I told the matter to Ajit Singh, he gave Rs. 5,000 to them and asked them to pay me after collection, but they did not. They do not even pay the electricity bill. I asked them to pay at least Rs. 100 per month as the fixed electricity charge, but even that is not paid, and I have to bear it from my own pocket,” he alleged.
The incident has triggered sharp reactions in the local political circles, especially at a time when party activities are expected to intensify ahead of the elections. The matter has now become a talking point among residents of the area.
