Landslide near Sonapur tunnel disrupts Silchar - Guwahati vehicular traffic

A fresh landslide has disconnected the commute between Barak and Guwahati. Last night’s rainfall in the hills caused landslides in Sonapur and blocked the entrance of the tunnel there. National Highway 6 connects Barak Valley with the rest of Assam including Guwahati.

Soil deposit from the landslide has blocked the entrance of the tunnel. Due to this, vehicles can’t ply the road, disrupting traffic to and from Barak Valley. This year, there have been repeated landslides during the monsoons blocking the Sonapur tunnel.

Work to restore the route has started on a war footing. Blocking of Sonapur tunnel after landslides leaves no alternative route to Guwahati for the people of the three districts of Barak. The incompletion of the East-West corridor or the Mahasadak leaves no alternative option for the people but to travel through the NH6 via Meghalaya.
