Large-Scale Burmese Supari Smuggling Operation Foiled by Cachar Police; Seizure Estimated at Rs 5 Crore
In a major breakthrough, the Dholai Police successfully intercepted a significant smuggling operation involving suspected Burmese areca nuts, commonly known as “supari.” Over the course of the last 24 hours, a special naka operation led to the apprehension of multiple individuals and the recovery of substantial quantities of the contraband substance. The estimated total value of the seized areca nuts is believed to be around Rs 5 crore.
The operation began with the meticulous coordination of the Dholai Police, under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta. The specialized checkpoint, or “naka,” was set up to target vehicles suspected of transporting illicit goods. In the course of this operation, several vehicles were intercepted, leading to the discovery of concealed Burmese supari.
- The first vehicle under scrutiny was a TATA Intra truck bearing registration number AS11EC-5482. Upon thorough inspection, a hidden compartment was discovered within the vehicle, containing approximately 200 kgs of suspected Burmese supari. The driver, Nebu Hussain Laskar (23 yrs), was immediately apprehended. Nebu Hussain Laskar is identified as the son of Late Moin Uddin Laskar and hails from Khaspur (Bhaga Bazar), P.S Dholai, in the Cachar district of Assam.
- The second vehicle, a Mahindra 12W truck with registration number NL01AD-7333, was also halted for inspection. Authorities found roughly 300 kgs of suspected Burmese supari cleverly concealed within a secret compartment in the driver’s cabin. The driver, identified as Rahul Das (23 yrs), and the son of Late Krishna Kanta Das, was swiftly taken into custody. He hails from Hawaithang, Kulicherra, P.S. Dholai, Dist. Cachar, Assam.
- Additionally, two more vehicles were detained as part of the operation. The detained vehicles include an M/V bearing registration number NL01AD-6479 and a TATA Sumo bearing registration number MZ-02A-0012. Both vehicles were found to be loaded with an approximate total of 600 kgs of suspected Burmese supari.
The Cachar Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta, revealed that the total estimated value of the seized contraband, Burmese supari, is approximately Rs 5 crore. This impressive operation is expected to deal a significant blow to the illegal trade network responsible for smuggling these prohibited goods.
Legal proceedings are now underway, and further investigations will be conducted to uncover the complete scope of this smuggling operation. The apprehended individuals will face charges related to their involvement in the illegal transportation and possession of the contraband substance.
