Late-night robbery at Tarapur, family robbed after being restrained at gunpoint
A case of late-night robbery has shaken the neighbourhood of the Tarapur area in Silchar. The incident took place at the house of a merchant named Kutu Chanda staying at Khudiram Sarani. At around 1:30 am on Wednesday, a group of armed robbers entered his house and tied the hands, feet and mouth of everybody present in the house. The robbers then seized about 1 lakh rupees in cash and other valuable items as well. Family sources claim that around 10 lakh rupees worth of things have been lost. Police came to investigate in the morning and found some small items lying on the road as well. It is believed that they fled through the Ramnagar area after the incident.
Kutu Chanda is a businessman, has a wine shop and other businesses as well. He lives with his mother, wife and two children at Khudiram Sarani near the Shibbari Road. According to family sources, a group of robbers strategically entered their house at night and detained them. The robbers’ faces were covered with masks, hence they could not be recognized but their conversation could be heard. They spoke the local language and used extreme profanity. The family members could not resist them as they had guns in their hands. They tied everyone up one by one and took about an hour to collect all the valuables from the house. However, the family members were not harmed physically.
Upon receiving the news on Thursday morning, local police officials, including Additional Superintendent of Police Jagadish Das, arrived at the scene. Preliminary investigations were carried out and various angles were investigated as well. Ananda Medhi, in-charge of the Tarapur police station, said that the preliminary investigation had found some information that could not be disclosed to the public at present. According to the police, a special plan is needed to catch the gang of robbers that did the job. The Police have received several clues related to the incident and are likely to arrest the perpetrators in the coming days. An account of the damage has been given to the police on behalf of the family, which the Police will verify. Besides, an investigation is already underway into how a group of robbers could have entered such a safe house and rob their members.
The robbery has caused a ruckus in the area. Many locales believe that if such a safe house can be robbed, then anybody in the neighbourhood could be robbed next. After several cases of daylight snatching took place last year, the police were able to detain some people arriving from other states and later the snatchings incidents stopped. This time, a band of robbers infiltrating such a highly secured house with guns is a matter of obvious concern. Unless the police take necessary action against such cases, it is not guaranteed that such incidents won’t happen again in the future.
