Laya Madduri attends a plastic removal awareness meeting held in Silchar
An awareness meeting was held on August 27 at Netaji Vidyabhavan Girls’ High School for removal of plastic in Silchar.
The deputy commissioner Cachar Laya Madduri, IAS was invited as the chief guest of the meeting. She was also felicitated by the School committee and by the N.G.O “Hridoy”. The NGO distributed bags made of cotton amongst the students present.
Speaking at the public awareness meeting Madduri said that plastic pollutes our environment. After using these plastics, people are throwing garbages into the drainage system, disrupting the normal flow of water in these drainage systems which creates artificial flood.
She also discussed how cattles, when consume these plastic products, get serious health issues and it can be fatal. She exhorted the students to use eco friendly cotton bags instead of using plastic bags.
The deputy commissioner administered the oath for the students to “refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle” plastic and waste materials. She also exchanged her thoughts and taught students how to keep the environment clean and explained the details of solid and liquid resource management.
The DC advised the students to refuse to take any plastic bags from the shopkeepers and also asked them to spread this awareness in their neighbourhood.
While delivering her speech Madduri mentioned that waste should be treated as income generating resources. In this meeting, various speakers like Gunajoyti Dutta, president of N.G.O including Dr. Siddhartha Bhattacharya, on behalf of the rotary club, Silchar also spoke to the students.
Debanjan Mukherjee Head master of Netaji vidyabhaban Girls High school, Benulal Barman from Rotary club, Silchar, member secretary of the school committee Babla Purkaystha, Nila Purkaystha were also present in the meeting.
