Locals rescue Indian Small Civet in Cachar; Animal famous for its potty as it makes the expensive coffee - Kopi Luwak

In a rare incident, a small animal known as the Indian Small Civet was found in a house in Nagdirgram Pt III, a village in Cachar. The animal is not commonly found in this region and is known for its role in producing expensive coffee. The animal is believed to be a pet animal for coffee production in foreign countries.

The incident occurred on Thursday night when a youth found the animal on a house top and safely caught it. The animal was later handed over to local forest officials, who rescued it and released it safely in the Palonghat forest area.

Jahan Uddin Chowdhury, the forest officer who rescued the animal, highlighted the importance of protecting this rare animal for the greater interest of the nation. He also commended the villager who caught the animal and handed it over to the authorities instead of killing it.

The breed plays a crucial role in producing Kopi Luwak, a type of coffee that is considered one of the most expensive in the world. The coffee is made from the potty of the animal, which is collected and processed to produce a unique flavor. The animal eats coffee berries, and the undigested seeds are excreted in its feces. These seeds are then collected and processed to produce a unique and flavorful coffee.

The production of Kopi Luwak is a labor-intensive process that involves several steps. First, the civets are kept in captivity, and their diet is controlled to ensure that they only eat high-quality coffee berries. The animals are housed in cages, which are cleaned regularly to prevent the spread of disease.

Once the civets have eaten the coffee berries, their feces are collected and washed thoroughly to remove any impurities. The seeds are then separated from the feces and dried in the sun. After drying, the seeds are roasted to bring out their unique flavor. The roasting process is carefully monitored to ensure that the beans are not overcooked or burnt.

Despite its high price, the production of Kopi Luwak has been criticised for its impact on the animal’s welfare.

The incident in Nagdirgram Pt III serves as a reminder of the need to protect rare and endangered species like the Indian Small Civet. By taking responsible actions like catching and handing over the animal to authorities, villagers can contribute to the conservation of these species and ensure that they continue to thrive in their natural habitats.
