Madrasa administration makes Legacy data compulsory for fresh admission

The proceedings to get names enlisted in National Register of Citizen (NRC) is still on, but the side effects of it has already started to surface in Barak Valley. Cachar district’s Durul Ulum Madrasa in Baskandi has issued a “farman’ (diktat) that it would make submission of Legacy Data compulsory for admission. This diktat from the Madrasa administration has created a lot of stir in Barak Valley. The NRC proceedings has already been causing a lot of harassment for common people and there is a huge sector opposing it.

Moreover there is no clarity on how the NRC will be used in future, as there are more drafts to get published. In such a scenario, this announcement to make legacy data compulsory for new admission is a clear indication that the decision makers are in support of the proceedings, and certainly ignoring the ongoing protests. Many religious organisations opposed the proceedings and few even went to court and are currently fighting a legal battle. The religious organisations are accusing that the genuine Indian Muslims who are residing in Assam are being portrayed as Bangladeshi refugees, and this Madrasa diktat certainly ignores those concerns.
The 121 year old Durul Ulum Madrasa administration announced that they would impose this rule for new admission in academic calendar 2018-19. “The admission proceedings will be very much similar to that of NRC proceedings, students will have to submit, 1971 voter list to prove their citizenship and then they  will need to provide an address proof too. If the student is above 18 years old, then he or she will need to submit voter id card,” mentioned the administration.

The administration is of the opinion that the Madrasa’s are often insulted as a hub where fundamentalists and Jihadi’s are nurtured and to clean up the image they decided to make Legacy data a compulsion. The interested students can collect admission forms between June 23 to June 25. The students then need to submit the forms, and on June 27 and June 28 the administration will conduct an admission test. On June 30, the results will be declared on the basis of which the students will be enrolled informed the administration.
