Mahila Sangathan takes out rally in Silchar, demands liquor ban in Assam, safety of women
The All India Mahila Sanskritik Sangathan took out a rally in Silchar seeking fulfillment of various demands on Friday on the occasion of World Women’s Day.
The rally, which started from near Madhyasahar Sanskritik Samiti around 1:30pm, witnessed scores of people besides the organisation members. It visited Central Road, Premtala and Shillongpatty and finally assembled at Madhyasahar Sanskritik Samiti.
A programme was held prior to the rally at the venue. The organisation members raised a number of demands and sought the intervention of the government in this regard. The demands include improved facilities for women regarding medical treatment along with initiation of neurology, nephrology departments at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, speedy judgment of cases related to crimes on women and children, prohibition on sale of liquor in Assam and provision of strict punishment in cases of harassment on women and such other crimes.
Organisation secretary Dulali Ganguly said though the government claims to have undertaken many initiatives for the welfare of women across the country, this is nothing but a “drama”. The government is publicising its works to woo voters before the elections; all these will vanish once the elections get over, she said.
Women in rural areas are living in a deplorable condition over the years. Poverty, safety of women and many other issues are there which need to be addressed, she said.
President Shikha Bhattacharjee, Swagata Chakraborty and Swapna Dey were also present. The programme concluded around 2:30pm.
