Majibur Rahman Choudhary and Kumarjit Dey Join Congress, Choudhary Slams BJP Over Smart Meters
Former District Forest Officer (DFO) of Cachar, Majibur Rahman Choudhary, and Kumarjit Dey, son of late three-time Katigorah MLA Kaliranjan Dey, joined the Congress on Monday. They were welcomed into the party by All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary Prithviraj Prabhakar Sathe.
On Wednesday, Majibur Rahman Choudhary arrived at Silchar’s Kumbhirgram Airport, where Congress workers and supporters greeted him with a warm welcome. Following this, a massive rally of nearly 1,000 supporters and vehicles escorted him to the district Congress office. Party leaders officially welcomed Choudhary at the Congress office, where a joining ceremony took place in the presence of Prithviraj Prabhakar Sathe. Both Choudhary and Dey were inducted into the party with the traditional Congress stole.
Speaking to the media, Majibur Rahman Choudhary expressed his long-standing association with Congress, recalling his days with NSUI during the peak of the Assam Movement. “The party that brought freedom to our country, I don’t think any other party comes close to its level of dedication in serving the people as Congress,” he stated. Choudhary also praised various Congress leaders from the British era to independent India, including Indira Gandhi.
Taking a dig at the BJP government, he criticised corruption and rising unemployment. “What to say about our current government, filled with corruption? The biggest issue we are facing is unemployment,” he remarked. He also criticised Assam’s smart electricity meters, comparing them with other states. “Other states are making electricity free, but in Assam, these meters are causing issues for poor and middle-class families,” he said. He added that he would dedicate himself to helping people and resolving their problems through his work in Congress.
Meanwhile, Kumarjit Dey explained his decision to leave the BJP and join Congress. “The old BJP of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Kabindra Purkayastha doesn’t exist anymore. To keep my reputation and work for the people, I have come to Congress,” he stated. He also mentioned his late father’s contributions, saying, “My father’s unfinished work can never be done from BJP.”
Addressing the gathering, Prithviraj Prabhakar Sathe expressed confidence in the party’s future with the new leaders. “With Majibur and Kumarjit joining us, Congress will grow stronger. We will contest the 2026 elections against the BJP’s misrule and oppression. Assam will be freed from the dictatorship of the ruling party, and a new chapter will begin,” he declared.
The induction of Choudhary and Dey is expected to bolster Congress’s presence in Cachar ahead of the upcoming elections.
