Major Drug bust at Silchar Airport as Mizoram residents caught with 4kg of Methamphetamine

Two Mizoram residents, identified as Joseph Lalnunmawia and F. Lalhmangaizuala, found themselves in deep trouble at Silchar Airport today as they were about to board an Alliance Airlines flight. What was supposed to be a routine security check of their check-in luggage turned into a major drug bust.

Airport staff conducting the security scan noticed something suspicious in the luggage, prompting them to alert the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officials present at the airport. This alert set off a chain of events that led to a significant drug seizure.

CISF officials, upon inspecting the bags and observing the uneasiness in the passengers’ gestures, immediately contacted the Airport Authority. Sensing that there might be something illicit involved, authorities acted swiftly, informing both Cachar Police’s Udharbond Police station.

The ensuing search of the passengers’ bags uncovered a substantial haul of Methamphetamine, weighing approximately 4 kilograms. This discovery raised concerns not only about the individuals’ potential involvement in drug trafficking but also about the growing issue of drug abuse in the region.

Methamphetamine, commonly referred to as “meth” or “crystal meth,” is a powerful and highly addictive central nervous system stimulant. It is part of a class of drugs known as amphetamines. Methamphetamine can take various forms, including a white crystalline powder, which is easy to synthesize and distribute.

The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has acknowledged the diligent efforts of the security and law enforcement agencies that led to the successful seizure of the drug consignment. He praised the collaborative work of Assam Police and CISF, which helped prevent the illegal transportation of this harmful substance.
