Man arrested in Barak Valley for uploading 'obscene' picture of girl on social media
A 30-year-old man was arrested by police at Balacherra under Borkhola constituency in Cachar district on Saturday for allegedly uploading an “objectionable” picture of a girl on social media.
The girl had reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her home on Wednesday. Bolai Malakar, the girl’s brother, had lodged a first information report with Borkhola police station accusing Sujit Das (alias Bappa) of uploading his sister’s objectionable picture on social media.
A case under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code was registered and a probe has initiated (case number – 172/19).
Sources said police, on the basis of specific information, carried out an operation on Saturday and arrested Sujit, a resident of Balacherra. On Sunday, he was produced before a court and sent to judicial custody.
Borkhola police station’s officer in-charge Surajit Choudhury said initial investigation has revealed courtship between Sujit and the deceased girl. However, the reason behind the girl’s decision of killing herself and few other aspects related to the death are still not known, he said.
He said an investigation was underway and more facts would come to light soon. The post-mortem will make the picture clearer, he added.
