Man lynched in Cachar, alleges mother; "There was an armed brawl and investigation is on," SDPO

A man identified as Afzal Hussain Mazumdar has been found dead. He has been attacked with multiple weapons including a dao. The incident occurred yesterday evening in Harinagar, Kanakpur part III- Brain Nagar area under Joypur Police Station.

According to the allegations of deceased Afzal Hussain Mazumdar’s mother, six to seven miscreants walked into their house and started assaulting Afzal. She alleged that he has lost his life on the spot following multiple armed assaults. When asked, why the miscreants assaulted him, she replied, “My son never misses a Namaz but sometime back, someone installed a Kali Idol in the house and so, he started worshipping Kali too. Since he was maintaining both, we never said anything to him, but they lynched him as he started worshipping Kali.”

The locals, however, countered saying that she is making up the Kali Puja story. They alleged that Afzal Hussain Mazumdar is a dreaded dacoit in the area and has multiple pending criminal proceedings against him. In fact, in the last month, two cases were lodged against him at the Joypur Police Station.

When asked if it was a case of mob-lynching, the SDPO of Lakhipur, Kulapradeep Bhattacharya said, “Prima facie it looks like it as was a fallout of a fight. Five-six individuals had some enmity and there was an armed brawl between the two parties following which one died. The investigation is on and we have identified some people, we will detain them soon for interrogation.”

Police sources confirmed that there are multiple cases against him including murder, burglary among others. Only proper Police investigation will confirm if he was killed because he offered Kali Puja or it was the result of a gang war.
