May 20 COVID Update: 1 ICU bed left in SMCH's COVID ward; record number of patients admitted again

Silchar Medical College and Hospital is getting chocked. The number of critical patients taking admission to SMCH has grown leaps and bounds. A Covid death audit committee meeting held today under the Chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner of Cachar yesterday. In the meeting, it was observed that the patients are reporting late to the hospital due to which a significant number of them are dying within a day or two of admission. The deputy commissioner has urged the general public to report to the hospital immediately after the oxygen saturation level drop below 94% on the pulse oximeter.

The doctors have also observed that a high number of patients depend only on paracetamol after testing positive for COVID 19. Only paracetamol is not enough, the doctors informed the deputy commissioner.

Vice Principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital Dr. Bhaskar Gupta informed that there are 273 patients admitted to the hospital’s COVID wards and out of them, 129 are on oxygen support. 21 patients are on ventilator support and 99 are in ICU. It is worth mentioning here that the current ICU capacity of SMCH’s COVID Ward stands at 100. This means there is only one ICU bed left at SMCH unless someone recovers and the bed is vacant.

On Thursday, again a record number of patients were admitted to SMCH. Earlier the highest one-day admission was 50, yesterday it rose to 53. 23 patients were discharged from SMCH after they recovered from the infection.

Three patients were declared dead at SMCH on Friday. Rupak Paul aged 36 years from Masimpur, Cachar was admitted at SMCH on 19th May. He breathed his last at 1 pm. on May 20th. 64 years old Krishna Kanu from Derby, Cachar got admitted at SMCH on 19 May and he passed away at 12:55 pm on May 20. Jahan Ahmed Laskar (46) from Masimpur, Cachar District got admitted at SMCH on May 19. He breathed his last at 2:30 pm on May 20, 2021.

Cachar District health department informed that 333 individuals have tested positive in Cachar taking the number of active cases to 1808.

Karimganj registered a highest spike of 134 fresh COVID-19 cases on Thursday, pushing the coronavirus tally in the district to 6,344. Of the 134 active cases detected on Thursday, 132 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test and two under RT-PCR.

The district has currently 698 active COVID-19 cases while 115 patients have been discharged from hospitals and home isolation on Thursday.

In the Hailakandi district, 102 individuals tested positive for COVID19.  There are 772 Active cases in the district.
