Miscreants Push Silchar Youth Off Building Inside SMCH, Fighting for Life
Arijit Mahapatra (Pol), a renowned cricketer of the valley, was brutally attacked by miscreants inside Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) on Sunday night (September 21). He was allegedly pushed off the first floor of a hospital building and is now battling for his life.
According to eyewitnesses, Pol was returning home after attending the condolence and tribute programme for the late singer Zubeen Garg at NIT Silchar when he got into a scuffle with a group of miscreants. His friends alleged that the attackers, identified as local middlemen and drug addicts, dragged him inside the SMCH premises before assaulting him.
One of his friends present at the spot told, “He is a very gentle person and never gets into fights. We found him lying senseless after these dalals dragged him inside. They are thieves, drug addicts and extortionists who torture people regularly. Now Pol is fighting for his life. One of them has been arrested, but the main culprit is still absconding.”
Police have arrested one accused, Akbal Hussain of Ghungoor, while another, identified as Anamul Haque, is currently absconding.
Pol’s friends further alleged that such incidents are frequent inside the SMCH campus. “These drug addicts drink openly inside the campus fields and later loot patients, steal phones and other belongings. This is a bigger gang at work, and today it was an attempt to murder. If the police fail to arrest the main culprit, we will launch a larger protest,” they warned.
The cricketer was later found by his friends lying unconscious in a drain within the hospital premises. He remains in a critical condition under treatment at SMCH.
