MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha’s Name Appears in Both Sribhumi and Cachar’s Electoral Roll After Special Revision

The final electoral roll was published by the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Assam, on Tuesday (February 10). The revision in the poll-bound state saw the deletion of 2.43 lakh names from the final list. However, one name that appears twice in the list is that of sitting North Karimganj MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, who had made Katigorah his second home after he had to join the BJP in early 2025.

Purkayastha, considered a possible contender from the Katigorah constituency, has enrolled his name in the bordering constituency of Cachar. What raises questions is that his name also continues to appear in the electoral roll of his previous constituency, North Karimganj (the district of Karimganj was renamed Sribhumi in 2025).

Electoral rolls downloaded after the Special Revision from the ECI Net portal of both North Karimganj and Katigorah show his name appearing in both constituencies. Barak Bulletin downloaded the lists from the official website (https://voters.eci.gov.in/download-eroll) to independently verify the details.

In Sribhumi’s North Karimganj Legislative Assembly constituency, Purkayastha’s name appears at Polling Station No. 291 – Sree Ramkrishna Bidya Niketan (Room No. 2), under Serial No. 664 (Page No. 25). The same roll also reflects the names of his family members under the same house number.

Cross-checking the electoral roll of Katigorah, his name appears again with the same EPIC number but under a different house number. In the final list downloaded from the same portal, his name is listed at 812 No. Manipur L.P. School, Katigorah, under Serial No. 1126 (Page No. 40).

It remains unclear whether a Form 7 application for deletion from the North Karimganj constituency was submitted or whether the duplication is a result of administrative oversight during the revision process. Under election rules, a voter is ordinarily permitted to be enrolled in only one constituency at a time.

The draft electoral roll had recorded a total of 2,52,01,624 voters. The final roll now stands at 2,49,58,139 — reflecting a reduction of 2,43,485 names, or a 0.97% decrease compared to the draft list.

Barak Bulletin attempted to reach Kamalakhya, but he was unavailable for any comments.
