Molestation Row: Senior teacher of Silchar Collegiate School put on suspension after student's complaint

The Managing Committee of Silchar Collegiate School has issued a “show-cause” notice against a senior faculty of the institute. Based on a written complaint by a student, this action was taken by the body. The application addressed to the Headmistress of the institute alleged Uttam Dey, the teacher of “molestation” and “physical abuse”.

The student of Class 10th has cited that it all started when she was in 8th standard and went to his home for private coaching. She informed other teachers then whom she trusted, but the former headmistress didn’t take any action against him declaring it an “outside event”. Later when the student was mistreated during an exam recently, she decided to write it to the authorities.

Talking to Barak Bulletin correspondent the current Headmistress of the school, Triborna Das said, “I’m unable to make any comment on that matter as this decision has been taken by the Management Committee of the school.”

Shantanu Roy, the elected President of the Managing Committee said, “It has been brought to our notice that the alleged teacher, Uttam Dey, has been involved in a molestation case with a student of our school. Based on a written complaint by the student we have issued a show-cause notice against him and suspended him from the school.” The notice will be sent to him tomorrow from the Committee. “From time of receiving the notice, he will be given 48 hours to prove in front of the body why we shall not suspend him,” told Roy.

It is to be noted that the teacher who has been working in this prestigious institute for over 12 years now, was suspended from his previous workplace for “similar reasons”. “We didn’t know about his character when he was appointed. Previously we have received verbal complaints against him and called him in front of the body for an explanation. He pleaded for a chance and we left him with a warning just because it happened at his home, but this didn’t work. This is the first written complaint we’ve received and hence we decided to take stringent action against him”, Roy further informed our correspondent.

According to sources, the teacher “inappropriately touched” the student during a private tuition class. When she protested this behavior of her teacher he tried to silence her. Later she left the tuition and informed the school authorities.

Shantanu Roy is a re-elected President of the Managing Committee and has mentioned his support for the victim student. The Committee has assured justice for the student who is going through trauma and dreadful nightmares. The student has written this letter expecting justice, becoming a whistle-blower so that other students don’t have to face this monstrosity.
