Move against "drink and drive" to intensify tonight; "Heavy penalty action against offenders," DC Keerthi Jalli
Yesterday, the Silchar Traffic Police informed that around Rs 80,000 worth of fines have been collected from the violators of the Motor Vehicles Act. As per the directions of the chief minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, there is an enforcement drive going on throughout the state.
The officials are stopping motorcycles plying on the roads, checking if the rider is drunk, his driving license, the papers of the vehicles. The Cachar district administration has formed a task force and officials have been deployed to take care of their respective regions.
“There is extensive enforcement drives being conducted with team of Transport officials, excise officials, police, officers on flying squad duty to ensure there is zero accident due to drunken driving,” explained deputy commissioner of Cachar, Keerthi Jalli.
She added, “The idea is to ring in the New Years in a safe responsible way where no family has to suffer the consequences of drunken driving.”
While there are many who are taking the warning signs lightly, deputy commissioner Keerthi Jalli reiterated, “We will continue it strictly throughout the night and heavy penalty action shall be taken against offenders.”
Drink responsibly and do not drink and drive. The drive initiated by the chief minister of the state and enforced by the district administrations across the state is commendable. However, it must be noted that drinking and driving is a crime not only on 31st December but everyday.
