Municipality’s door to door garbage collection, “Resistance from existing agencies who are unauthorized waste pickers,” Sumit Sattavan

Silchar Municipality Board has issued a statement announcing the names of SHGs and NGOs authorised to collect garbage from the doorsteps. From April 20, 2021, the Municipality board will stop collecting garbage from roadside dumpsites.

The Municipality has also announced that free green and red trash cans will be provided to all the households in the Municipality area. Speaking with Barak Bulletin, Executive Officer of Silchar Municipality Board, Sumit Sattavan informed that a meeting was called for with leading citizens of the town at DSA few months back. “Therein it was decided that ward wise NGOs will be allotted for door to door collection on chargeable basis,” informed Sattavan.

He added “The charges to be collected from every house is based on the Municipal bylaws. Accordingly tenders were called for and the NGOs were selected. These NGOs are going to collect from your doorstep and ensure that the waste is not thrown out on the roads.”

The details of these organizations have been given in newspaper and will also be available on the website https://www.silcharmunicipality.in/ in a few days. The details are also available on the official Facebook page of Silchar Municipal Board

(Please note: SMB did not give any advertisement on Barak Bulletin and this is not a paid story).

“We are facing stiff resistance from existing agencies who are unauthorized waste pickers, who collect from houses irregularly and dump it on the roads. Also, many households are still sceptical about the SHGs and NGOs coming to their doors for waste collection. I encourage the households to give their wastes to SMB approved waste collectors, who have authorization,” added Sattavan.

Silchar town ranked 340 out of 382 towns in Swachh Survekshan 2020. The ranking does not project Silchar as a historic town with a culturally rich, socially conscious and well-educated society at the national level. “We are striving towards changing this. We are sure that residents of the town shall support us in this endeavour,” concluded Sattavan.
