Nigerians apprehended in Karimganj are not Corona infected, confirms DC Anbamuthan MP
The COVID-19 outbreak, which began from China’s Wuhan city, has now spread to the whole world with WHO declaring it as a ‘Pandemic’. In India, there are 107 confirmed cases till 15th March 2020, including two deaths. Many states have started suspending schools, colleges, mass gatherings, etc as a preventive measure to contain the spread of the disease with Assam also officially entering into the list, from Sunday.
Meanwhile, Karimganj Police on Saturday apprehended two Nigerians at Churaibari of Assam in Tripura Border, suspecting them to be drug peddlers. They were immediately admitted at the civil hospital to check if they are infected by Covid 19. Two of them were identified as Kanu Kingsby (28) and Chindeu Nangshu (30).
Karimganj DC, Anbamuthan MP, while speaking with Barak Bulletin informed that both were traveling without transit documents and were holding Nigerian passport. “We have isolated them at Karimganj Civil hospital under police guard so as to keep them under observation for coronavirus. They will be kept there for 14 days. Let me clarify they are not Corona affected.”
DC later also held a press conference at his conference hall and asked people not to go panic, as the news was widely being spread through social media.
It can be mentioned here that Barak Valley has become a safe corridor for Nigerian intruders, who cross the border through Tripura state and travel through the valley towards Guwahati. In 2019, around 30 such intruders were arrested by Meghalaya and Assam Police, separately.
