NIT Silchar rusticates 4 students for brutally assaulting mess workers, fines 12

After a thorough internal investigation, the National Institute of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar), a renowned engineering college in India, has taken decisive disciplinary actions against students involved in the shocking assault on three mess workers that occurred on July 27, 2023. The incident was initially reported by Barak Bulletin, bringing it to national attention.

In an official notice issued yesterday and signed by Registrar KL Baishnab, NIT Silchar announced stern measures against the students responsible for the gross violation of discipline and misconduct related to the assault on mess workers at Boy’s Hostel-4.

A total of twelve students have been fined Rs 10,000 each as part of their punishment. The students facing fines are Raghuvendra Singh, Supratik Saha, Rajan Kumar Raj, Mirajul Islam Sayem, Jyotishka Bhattacharjee, Jyotirmoy Kalita, Pappu Mondal, Abhijit Doley, Kangkan Jyoti Kalita, Rohit Nandi, Abhinav Goswami, and Saurav Jyoti Saikia.

Furthermore, another official notice, also signed by the registrar, confirmed the rustication of four students involved in the incident. They will face rustication for two semesters, covering the periods of July to December 2023 and January to June 2024. In addition to rustication, these students have been expelled from the hostel during this time.

The students who have faced rustication and hostel expulsion are Saurabh Kumar Meena, Himanshu, Rohit Kumar Meena, and Md. Jubair Mahmud Protim.

The incident, which gained widespread attention after a video went viral, has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of support staff on educational campuses. The video featured a group of students brutally assaulting three contractual mess workers while abusing and accusing them of robbery. An allegation that stood unestablished and thus found baseless. A committee was formed to probe the matter and the Police bestowed its trust on the institution to deliver justice to the victims. After spending more than a month on the investigation, the authority has issued a notice on September 1.
