No case of child lifting in Cachar, two men and two women becomes victims of rumour mongering, hospitalised
Barak Valley has become hostile to people whom the locals identify as “strangers”. In many rural regions and suburbs of the valley, many became victims of moral police after they were believed to be “Khuchidora”, local lingua franca for child lifters. According to official reports, 4 people in Cachar became victims of Khuchidora doubt and were hospitalised after public lynching. So far there has been no registered case with the police of any child lifting but the rumours are spreading like a wildfire.
Cachar Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police held a joint meeting today evening to clarify doubts about the Khuchidora or child lifting rumours in the district. The press meet was held in the conference hall of the DC’s office, where both police and officials from the District Administration were present. While addressing the media the Superintendent of Police, APS Numal Mahatta said, “So far there has been no case of child lifting in the entire district. All these are just rumours spread by some unruly public. For such rumours innocent people are becoming victims of this. Most of this information is spread in social media which makes the matter worse”.
Speaking of the moral policing, the SP said, “People are taking the matter in their hands without knowing any base of the matter. So far four people have become victims of this, two women and two men. The two men were travelling and as they were passing through the Lakhipur Tea Estate, they became victims of the wrath of the public. They were accused of being child lifters and the situation went out of hands. The two women were also accused of the same and are severely injured. All of them were then sent to medical care by the police after much persuasion to the public. Given their health conditions we still couldn’t establish conversation to know about their whereabouts”. The SP has also mentioned the formation of a special police team who is maintaining vigil both online and offline.
In the same meeting, Cachar DC IAS Rohan Kumar Jha has said, “Most of the misinformation is spread in the social media which makes our monitoring difficult. Also, since no case has been registered, we can not take any legal action. The SP and his officers are monitoring the activities on social media and action will be taken accordingly”.
There is constant fear among the parents about child lifting, even though there has been no such cases to prove this allegation. Innocent people are becoming victims of moral policing and so far one mentally challenged female begger has become victim of this rumour mongering, among many other victims. She was brutally lynched by the public in Pailapool area of Lakhipur in Cachar and the same was broadcasted on Facebook live.
