Not a word on Social Media! Why did MP, Dr. Rajdeep Roy ignore Team's success in Nuruddin Trophy?
Recently, I got an opportunity to interview Dr. Deepa Malik, Padma Shri, Khel Ratna, Arjuna Awardee, and Paralympic Medallist. The legendary figure was talking about the achievement of Indian Athletes in the Tokyo Paralympics. She explained how it was an absolute ecstasy for the Specially Abled athletes to get a video call from the Prime Minister of the Country, each time India won a medal. Not only that, Narendra Modi left no stone unturned to ensure that he has appropriately congratulated each and every athlete on social media, to celebrate the achievement.
This brand of leadership from the Prime Minister is being replicated everywhere in the country. The MPs and MLAs use social media to appreciate and celebrate achievement. Silchar MP, Dr. Rajdeep Roy is also very active on social media. He shared many posts during the flash floods that sent a good message to the people of Barak Valley. He writes columns and shares them on social media. However, the Social Media native and tech-savvy MP, who is otherwise very enthusiastic about sports, ignored the historic achievement of the Silchar Cricket Team.
Silchar won Assam’s senior Inter-District cricket championship, the Nuruddin Ahmed Trophy. Samik Das, the stand-in captain of the team led the boys to the podium. Each player gave their best to achieve the laurels for the district sports association, Silchar.
It is worth mentioning here that Silchar had last won the trophy more than a decade ago. Also, this time, many players like State player Abhishek Thakuri, emerging sensation Aman Singh got stranded in Ditokcherra after the landslides. They were on their way to Guwahati to play in the final leg of the Nuruddin Trophy. They returned to Silchar all the way and then eventually managed to reach Guwahati by air.
Does this tumultuous journey not deserve a single congratulatory message on the official handle of the Member of Parliament of Silchar? Why the otherwise proactive MP, a doctor who cures broken bones of sports personalities, who recently organised a ‘Rajdeep Roy Rural and Urban Football Championship’ who is from the party of Narendra Modi who has always been vocal for local, SNUB THE SILCHAR CRICKET TEAM at least, on public platforms?
Immediately after the result was declared, MP (Rajya Sabha) Sushmita Dev congratulated the team on social media. Lakhipur MLA Kaushik Rai, congratulated the team on social media. MLA Silchar, Dipayan Chakraborty made a video call to the captain of the team, Samik Das and invited him to a felicitation ceremony. If sources are to be believed, DSA Secretary invited Silchar MP to the felicitation ceremony and in response, Dr. Rajdeep Roy congratulated the DSA Secretary, BJP’s Bijendra Prasad Singh.
Why is Dr. Rajdeep Roy shying away from publicly congratulating the Silchar Cricket Team? Is it because he is one of the masterminds in disrupting the Governing Body of Silchar DSA? During the last election of Silchar DSA, Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy was keen to contest. In fact, he was keen to win uncontested, but later, especially after Sushmita Dev decided to join the bandwagon, Rajdeep Roy backed out. Since then, there has always been a tiff between the DSA body and MP, even though both the General Secretary of Silchar DSA, Bijendra Prasad Singh and MP Silchar, Dr. Rajdeep Roy belong to the same political party, BJP?
So is it ego or infighting in the BJP that is forcing Rajdeep Roy to ignore the achievement of the young boys, most of whom are voters in his constituency?
Or is it because he does not want to distract the rebel group? Recently, Assam Olympic Association, going beyond its constitutional boundaries, canceled membership of Silchar DSA. The matter has been dragged to the Court and is subjudice by nature. But, that has energised the members of the rebel group including Subimal Dhar who is one of the seasoned Sports Administrators. Called the Sports Forum, this is the same group that organised the ‘Rajdeep Roy Rural and Urban Football Tournament’.
Whatever might be the reason, MP Rajdeep Roy, not putting a line on Social Media congratulating the Silchar Cricket Team has opened windows of speculation. The warm welcome that the team has got from the people of Silchar, it is certain that the MP’s snub won’t bother them. But definitely helps in understanding the priorities…
