NRC: SC extends the final publication deadline from July 31 to August 31, 2019

The Supreme Court heard the government’s plea on two key aspects of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), viz., sample re-verification and extension of the deadline for publication of the citizens’ register beyond July 31. The apex court decided to agree to a deadline extension however turned down the re-verification plea.

However, it turned down the prayer of the Centre and the Assam government seeking 20% sample re-verification of names included in the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the districts bordering Bangladesh.

Rejecting the plea, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said the report of NRC state co-ordinator Prateek Hajela pointed out that 27% re-verification had already happened in the process of adjudication of fresh claims and objections.
