Indians need not worry. All Indians will have their name listed in the second draft of National Register of Citizens. This is what Cachar district police superintendent Rakesh Roushan said while delivering a speech in a NRC awareness seminar in Silchar.
There are a lot of anxiety in people’s mind with regards to NRC. People are petrified, “Will my name get listed in the second draught or will I have to live the rest of my life in Bangladesh or in some detention camp,” these are the thoughts that scare people in Barak Valley. To add fuel to the fire there are several baseless rumours doing rounds in social media. SP Rakesh Roushan acknowledged the presence of anxiety in people’s mind and rumours on social media and said there is no need to panic even if the name does not get published in the second draft of NRC, “After the publication of the second draft there is one mont time to rectify any inconsistency. Also people must keep their faith in the law of the land and the judiciary,” said Roushan.
The superintendent of police was very happy about the fact that all throughout when NRC proceedings was going on, the valley kept its peace and harmony intact, “Not a single incident of violence nor any law and order issue was reported anywhere, which is a matter of pride,” he said.
Roushan mentioned that actions will be taken as per law against those who submitted fake documents and family tree in order to get enlisted in the NRC. He also informed that necessary measures have been taken to maintain peace and harmony after the publication of the second draft of NRC. “The administration is doing its best to ensure easy access to the published list. Everyone will be able to see the list and there would be help available for those who need in all the help centers,” said Roushan.
At the beginning of the day’s meeting, the purpose was explained by Village Defence Force’ CO Sahanuraj. While delivering his speech, editor of daily broadsheet, Samayik Prasanga, Taimur Raja Chowdhury expressed his concerns. He said, “NRC’s State Co-ordinator Prateek Hajela gave different instructions at different times which caused immense confusion among common people. He gave orders and then revoked them which is why the citizens are upset.”
