Panchayat elections in April-May announces State Election Commissioner, H N Bora

Assam Gram Panchayat elections to take place right after Bihu in late April and May 2018, today in a media statement Assam State Election Commissioner Harendra Nath Bora made the announcement.
The State Election Commission had earlier directed the government to conclude Panchayat election by February, 2018, before the board examinations. But, due to the ongoing NRC proceedings the election got delayed.
In Panchayat election people of Gaon-Panchayat areas elect, ‘Member’, Anchalik Panchayat (AP), Gaon Panchayat (GP), and Zila Parishad Candidate (ZPC).
The current Panchayat term ends in July 2018, but there are already many Panchayat areas where the term has concluded and hence it is important to conduct the election immediately feels Bora. He said, “The Election Commission is prepared to conduct the elections, we have sent ballot boxes and nomination papers to all the districts and by May we will be able to conclude electoral proceedings.”
The Retd. IAS also mentioned that the elections would be conducted in three phases and a budget of Rs 145 crore has been sanctioned for the same.
After a clean sweep in 2016 Assembly elections BJP will eye a landslide victory in 2018 Panchayat elections too, while Indian National Congress along with its United Progressive Alliance will try its best to redeem itself in the upcoming elections. NRC is certain to be the key talking point of the election campaigns.
The government in its State budget has announced a number of rural development schemes and Panchayat electorates will play a vital role in ensuring ground level developments, so overall 2018 Panchayat elections in certain to draw a lot of attention.
