Police arrests Khairul Islam, the illegal immigrant who got deployed in government's NRC team
As days pass, more and more controversies surface from beneath the NRC world. The most talked and written about National Register of Citizens, which forced more than 40 lakh people to wonder about their future had skeletons lying in its own wardrobe.
Government formed a team of over 60,000 officials which looked after the entire NRC proceedings for a period of over 5 years. Today, Morigaon Police arrested one of them as he was a ‘declared’ foreigner.
Khairul Islam, teacher of Thengshali Khanda Pukhuri Lower Primary school, was declared as a foreigner by the 3rd Foreigner Tribunal after a duly followed legal proceeding.
Despite that, Khairul continued to work as a teacher in the school, and in 2017 when the Government was recruiting teachers to work in the NRC team, he too got a call.
Since December 2017, he has been involved in Government duties with regards to NRC. Basically, a declared foreigner was playing a vital role in deciding who is an Indian citizen and who is not.
After the publication of the final draft on July 30, it came to everyone’s attention that Khairul was once declared as a foreigner by the tribunal, and that posed a question mark on the authenticity of the NRC proceedings. The public outrage awakened the administration from its slumber and today Morigaon Police managed to arrest him. He went underground in Morigaon’s Moirabari area from where Police detained him. Soon he will be sent to Tezpur detention camp.
Swapnaneel Deka, a senior Police official informed in a press conference. He also mentioned that the Police is trying its best to arrest other family members of Khairul Islam as soon as possible.
This arrest exposes one more loophole in the NRC proceedings.
