Police constable in Silchar physically assaulted in line of duty by a 'social worker' during curfew hours

According to the state government’s recent SOP, ordinary people must not go out and take to the streets after 2 pm, and the decision has been taken to create awareness among the people and maintain social distance to fight the second wave of the pandemic. Police officers have been vigilant since two in the afternoon to enforce the SOP. However, some people, under the garb of ‘social worker’, are attacking police. One such shocking incident took place on Sunday afternoon when Kamrul Islam Laskar, head of the social organization New Life Foundation, first insulted Rangirkhari police constable Nityananda Das and then attacked him to leave him in a bloody state.

Surprisingly, the police have not yet registered a case against the accused. When the Rangirkhari police station was contacted, they did not respond. Meanwhile, all the high-ranking officials of the department, starting from the Police Superintendent, have been present at the Assam-Mizoram border all day, so they did not get any news of the incident. Taking this opportunity, a civilian ended up attacking a uniformed police official on duty and after that, even spent some time at the police station before eventually leaving without getting apprehended. 

Talking to police constable Nityananda Das after the incident, he said that at around 4 pm, the curfew had already started and a checkpoint had been set up in front of the Rangirkhari police station in Sonai road. It was then that the accused was halted at the checkpoint while driving in his car. The accused then got furious with this and shouted at the constable to move away. His vehicle had a special permission permit from the DC office as a social worker attached to it, that’s why the police officials didn’t ask him much. But the accused was hurling abuses at the constable by threatening him that he’s a powerfully influential person who could do anything to him. Nityananda Das forbade him to use such vile language, in which the man started the car and hit the constable. He was injured and part of his hand was injured badly that started bleeding. At that time, other policemen of the police station came and jumped to handle the incident.

The police department did not file a case against the man even after a police constable was physically assaulted in the line of duty. Attempts were even made to persuade the assaulted police officer to forget all this and apologize. It has been reported that the accused named Kamrul Islam Laskar was treated well while he was in the police station and was kept in a special chair with utmost respect even after everything he did. Even the police officers themselves did not dare to ask how come a civilian got the right to assault a police officer on duty under the identity of a social worker. While these policemen do not forget to lathicharge the poor people on the streets, some of the police personnel carry out daily torture with the poor vegetable and fish vendors. A few days ago, a resident of the Rongpur area died of a heart attack for intimidation of police.
