Police official filmed while taking money, arrested; "We are investigating the matter," SP Karimganj

A video surfaced yesterday on social media which features a Police official negotiating with a victim party and eventually, taking money. The official has been identified as sub-inspector Jitendra Sinha and the Karimganj Police has already arrested him. 

Confirming the development to Barak Bulletin, Padmanabh Baruah, superintendent of Police, Karimganj said, “We have arrested him and now he is being interrogated. We are investigating the matter further to find why did he collect the bribe, how much and why was the bribe paid.”

It is worth mentioning here that though the video became viral on social media yesterday, it was filmed on October 16, 2021, more than a couple of months back. Premdhan Nath driving his Hyundai Creta car met with an accident. He says, his vehicle was hit by a speeding Tata Sumo and due to which, it got severely damaged. Soon after the incident, he went to the Patharkandi Police station to lodge a complaint.

“I wanted the Police report in order to raise a claim with my insurer and that is why I approached the Police station. I am a victim of an accident and instead of investigating the matter and delivering me justice, the Police official got busy in negotiating and making money,” informed Nath.

He added that he is a resident of Guwahati and repeatedly asked the Police official Sinha for the Police report. “It has been two months and he did not provide the report to me. Each time I called him, he kept saying that I must visit the Police Station in person to acquire the Police report. It will need more than Rs 5 lakh for me to fix my car and yet I received no cooperation from the Police,” said Nath.

He confirmed that he was tricked to pay Rs 7000 to Police Official Jitendra Sinha. When asked why the video was shared two months later, Nath replied, “It was shot by someone else and we just received the video.”

The video even garnered the attention of SDGP, Assam Police, GP Singh as he tagged SP Karimganj on microblogging platform twitter and asked to look into the matter. Senior officers of Karimganj Police visited Patharkandi and arrested Sinha after verifying the authenticity of the video.
