Protest against CAB in Hailakandi; Police arrests more than 50

The Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 is about to be tabled in the Lok Sabha and the situation in Assam continues to get volatile. While so far, the protests against the bill were restricted to Bramhaputra Valley now there sections who are hitting the roads in Barak Valley too.

Today morning, members of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and Chatra Mukti Sangram Samiti (CMSS) started raising slogans against the Bill in Hailakandi’s Krishnapur Bazaar area. Soon after that, they blocked the national highway in the Krishnapur Bazar area which disturbed the vehicular traffic condition.

Police officials from Lala Police Station, Abdullahpur Fari Police Station, and a battalion of CRPF Jawan rushed to the spot to break the blockade and bring the situation under control.

As per available information, more than 50 protesters have been arrested by Police. “Initially the Police officials tried to negotiate with the protesters but after they resisted all the attempts, the officials forced them into a van and escorted them to the police station,” said an eyewitness.
