The indefinite rail blockade by North Cachar Hills Indigenous Students Forum (NCHISF) has been called off. The blockade announced in the Dima-Hasao district for non-payment of land compensation was withdrawn today early morning.

The additional DC/Haflong arrived at New Harangajao Rly station at about 9:30 pm yesterday and conducted a meeting with the NCHISF leaders and said that by first week of May, 2018 some positive result will come out. After an internal discussion the team members took out their banner from the railway track and walked out of New Harangajao station.

As per sources, the rail blockade period passed peacefully and no untoward incident was reported. Sources in Silchar railway station informed us that the rail authorities will first run a goods train and after that Trivandrum Express will run as per schedule in the evening.

Earlier on April 18, NFR had sent  out a notice stating, “In reference to ASC/SIB/LMG’s message no P/(LM)/IB-11/18, Dated 17.04.18 agitation by NCHISF (North Cachar Hills Indigenous Students Forum) over Dima-Hasao district against non payment of due compensation for fortified land, further information revealed that the students forum, the apex student body of Dima-Hasao district has decided to launch indefinite rail blockade in the district from Thursday i.e. 19.04.2018 in view of the above the cancellation/short termination of the trains are as under.” All the trains between Silchar and Lumding were cancelled while few got rescheduled.

The forum had called for a strike on numerous occasions earlier but after been given assurance, they called it off every time. A source had shared with us that even after meeting the railway authorities for more than 15 times; their genuine demands have always been ignored. “Not being able to fulfill their promises again and again is a clear indication that the railway authority has no intention to solve the problem, and in that case, they should be prepared to invite more their way,” the source added.
