Meet Rajib Debroy, a popular DJ from Silchar
A profound passion for music and the eagerness to explore its diverse flavours was always in his genes. From his desi tashan, western swag or just style, he never fails to entertain his crowd to the core. He is Rajib Debroy (aka RD, DJ RD Roy), one of the most popular names in the DJ-ing scenario in Silchar.
DJ RD Roy, who recently moved to Mumbai, has worked in Silchar on a number of music videos like Pyar Na Kario, Akhiyaan, Roop Tera Mastana Remake, Rehnuma and Daru Wali Party among others. A big fan of Hardwell, RD currently works at Barrel Mansion, a famous party hub in Mumbai, and aspires to be one of the top DJs in the country.
In an interaction with Barak Bulletin, DJ RD Roy shares some of the experiences related to his DJ-ing journey and other aspects. Excerpts:
BB – How did you develop a passion for DJ-ing? What prompted you to move to Mumbai, the city of dreams and try your luck there? How has been the experience so far?
RD – It was 2009 when I used to mix songs for many dancers and dancing groups in Silchar. At that time, there wasn’t any scenario of DJ-ing in our valley. In 2010, I had attended a DJ show in Guwahati and that was where the love for DJ-ing in me started to bloom. I noticed attentively what the DJ (in the show) was doing – like how he was mixing one track with another live on mixers, how he was interacting with the people (crowd) who were grooving, cheering and having a great time. That impressed me immensely and that’s how I decided to be a DJ.
A friend of mine (who is a DJ from Guwahati) explained to me the basic factors about DJ-ing. Besides, I learned by watching videos of DJ-shows on YouTube. In November 2011, I did my first gig for a birthday party in Hotel Borail View in Silchar. Thereafter, everything changed, and I started receiving calls for private parties and events. That’s how my journey started as a DJ.
Apart from DJ-ing, I am into composing music, rapping and video and graphics editing. I have done post-production work for many music videos of our valley. Eventually, I decided to learn more about the things I know and improve my skills. That was the reason I came to Mumbai. So far the experience has been very good. I have got to learn many things from many seniors who are working in the industry and doing superb work.
BB – How difficult is it to cope up and find work for a newcomer in Mumbai? What are the challenges?
RD – Mumbai is a city where lakhs of people come to find work every day and as such the competition is really very high. For a newcomer, it is hard to just come and get engaged in work. One needs to have the patience to wait for his/her moment. But I must add, Mumbai has got something for everyone.
BB – You have worked with former Sa Re Ga Ma Pa 2005 winner Debojit Saha for the ‘Hawayein Cover’, that released recently. Tell us something about the project.
RD – Working with Debojit da (Debojit Saha) is always a pleasure. He is very down-to-earth and supportive as a person. It was fantastic to be a part of ‘Hawayein’. It was the second music video in which I did the post-production for him. Before that, I had worked with him on another project titled “Romantic Madley”. I really hope to work with him in the future.
BB – Silchar, fondly called the ‘City of Love’, has witnessed a lot of DJ-shows and such other events in the past, especially in 2014 and 2015. However, the trend has apparently faded in the past couple of years. What do you think is the reason behind this?
RD – Funds, I believe, has been one of the major reasons behind the slump in the number of events like DJ-nights and others in Silchar. Besides, frequent brawls in many incidents in the past are another reason behind the reluctance of people in organising such events.
Organising an event needs a lot of money, apart from permissions from the authorities. When a scuffle takes place, all your hard work goes in vain.
BB – What are your upcoming projects and plans? Where do you want to see yourself in the next three years?
RD – Right now, I am concentrating on upgrading my knowledge and skills. About my upcoming projects, my single (song) is almost ready. The song features me along with some other artists from Mumbai. It will be released in April. Besides, I’m working on a few other projects which will be released very soon. In the next three years, I want to see myself as a nationally-known DJ and composer.
