Monday afternoon District Administration met other organisation members and political leaders to restore peace and harmony in volatile Silchar. But the meeting did not materialise to something fruitful as violence and communal tension continued in bits and pieces. Late evening an auto rickshaw was set ablaze by a mob after a bike rider was allegedly attacked in Panchayat Road. Since the incident general public started questioning the integrity and capacity of District Administration and Police forces.
The angst went on a different level after Police arrested three young boys from Das Colony area in connection with the Rangirkhari auto vandalisation. Moment after the arrest the locals started demanding for an immediate release as they were sure that the three Police took into custody were innocent and are getting trapped. Of the three one was a 16 year old minor. Silchar Municipality Board’s Commissioner of Ward No. 18 Ashim Das too accompanied the gathering of about 150 people in Das Colony area and demanded immediate release. Das called up SP Rakesh Roushan and through the telephonic conversation he got to know that Police was searching for a man called Montu Das who they suspect was involved in the Rangirkhari incident and by mistake took Das Colony’s Mintu Das into custody.
Initially the security personnels were not revealing where they kept the three taken into custody and were not ready to hear any arguments either. But, then ward commissioner threatened that if the three residents of Das Colony are are not released immediately he would resign from the post of ward commissioner and will also leave the political party. Das spoke to the local MLA and informed him about all the developments.
After all the pressure from 150 odd local residents and Ward Commissioner Ashim Das, the three taken into custody was released at around 3:30 AM.
