Rash driving in Silchar leaves 4 including Debojit Saha's niece, Sajal Acharjee's son injured

A horrifying incident unfolded in Silchar’s Rongpur area last night as a speeding Maruti Suzuki Ritz, heading from Udharbond to Silchar, collided with the divider near the approach to the Sadarghat bridge. The reckless driving resulted in the injury of four individuals, with varying degrees of severity.

According to statements recorded by the police, eyewitnesses revealed that the Maruti Suzuki Ritz was traveling on the wrong side of the road, crashing into the divider before overturning and rolling multiple times.

The driver of the ill-fated vehicle has been identified as 23-year-old Pratham Khandelwal. He reportedly suffered injuries to his shoulder and sought medical attention at the Casualty Department around 2:00 am following the accident. Family sources indicate that he has since been released from the hospital.

Among the injured, Saptarshi Acharjee, the son of Congress leader Sajal Acharjee, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Debangana Saha, a niece of renowned singer Debojit Saha, has been admitted to a local nursing home and is reportedly in critical condition, as per hospital sources. Another individual, Harsh Jalan, is also undergoing treatment for severe injuries in the same hospital. Both are fighting for their lives and their family members and friends are praying for response.

The vehicle involved in the accident, a Maruti Suzuki Ritz with registration AS11 D9783, registered in the name of Santosh Khandelwal, has been impounded by the police for further investigation.

Social media posts by people related to the incident suggest that the individuals in the car had attended a party at a farmhouse in Udharbond before the accident occurred on their return journey. Another car, carrying friends of the accident victims, was driven by a designated driver, and its occupants reached their destination safely.

As investigations into the circumstances of the accident continue, the community awaits updates on the recovery of those injured and hopes for their speedy and complete rehabilitation.
